5 Ways how to adapt to change as an International Student

I’ve encountered lots of changes into my life, from changing houses to countries and every time I wanted to adapt to it, that much I wanted to run away. I couldn’t cope well with it.  Change is difficult for some persons, including me, but I’ve learned through many years of experiences that we should try to adapt to it or else we wouldn’t be able to realize our dreams.  We mustn’t fear adjustments because, they are there to help us grow and develop as a better person.  So, I’m writing this article to let you know some of the ways of taking change as a good experience and not as a catastrophe.

1# Create your own cozy spot

You’ve moved out recently, yet boxes and luggage’s surround you all the time.  Some of them are unpacked and the others are scattered around your new home.  Before you begin your new lifestyle, try to rearrange your new home/apartment as you like.  Create something unique and most importantly cozy for you.  Your home must be the place you want to return after a long and stressful day at work/university.  Believe me, it’s hard at the beginning, but it can be done in a couple of days.

2# Buy yourself something decorative

It’s boring to see every day only walls, table and bed.  Buy yourself some flowers or lightbulbs to lighten up your mood or not to feel homesick.  Don’t waste time complaining that the new place is nothing like the old, try adapting to the new change and live your life to the fullest.

3# Explore the city

Life as an international student must be interesting, because you are in a new place and can make new friends too.  Don’t waste your time sitting alone in your room and scrolling down the internet.  Make yourself a favor and try exploring the new city.  Visit every weekend the internet page of events in town and go.  Trust me you will find many interesting things to do there.

4# Experiences vs Material things

As a student you mustn’t focus only on material things for your home.  it’s better that money to spend on experiences as you can learn something new.  Try every time that you go out to skip shopping malls and to go out with your friends.  A dinner with your friends is much worth than a pair of new jeans in the drawer.

5# Travel the country you are in

Every time I hear people that want to travel out of the country and go to famous places (Netherlands, Czech Republic etc.), yet this doesn’t mean that you also must do the same.  When you are in a new country, try booking bus tickets as they are the cheapest and explore different cities in your country.  Follow the prices of different means of transport and pack your backpack. Don’t stay alone at home because that can induce you into an unsatisfied mood.

Adaptation can be difficult, especially when you are all alone in a new country, but having a plan in your head can be helpful.  Try creating comfort in your new place and see that it isn’t that bad to encounter change.  In the beginning it can be difficult, but with time everything becomes better.  Don’t back up and leave, just try to adjust to the situation.  In the end everybody has undergone stressful situations while changing, but having the skill of perseverance, can help you reach what you want in life.
